The heat of the summer is finally starting to wane and it’s officially time to switch maxi dresses and linen for layers and autumnal shades. So, here’s everything you need to know about the new season and the styles your autumn wardrobe can’t be without. The only question is, which to try first?
1.
It’s official; we’ve gone wild for animal print this autumn. From Proenza Schouler to Calvin Klein and Michael Kors (the king of animal print himself), we can’t get enough of spots, snake scales and tiger stripes. Style rules? There are none.
2.
Falling temperatures call for layers, and then some. So why opt for one coat when you can wear two? The cape can be the easiest way to do this – worn over the shoulders of another simple coat in a contrasting colour. The same goes for puffa jackets too: multiply by two.
3.
Corduroy, leather and suede all deserve a coveted spot in your autumn wardrobe. The leather dress (and skirt) are key for the season, or for those looking to switch it up, opt for a power suit in rich corduroy. Forget any connotations of the eighties; look for pastel colours to give it a fresh spin.
4.
It was hard to miss the Clueless-style epidemic that’s been sweeping your Instagram feed and the runways alike – even Versace referenced Cher Horowitz’s signature yellow plaid. Looking further back into the archives, Prince of Wales check, heritage plaid and tartan are all set to make a return.
5.
The pleated skirt is back and better than ever – from ankle-grazing to flowing and with pleats as sharp as a knife. Team them with a chunky knit and tough ankle boots or creepers and socks. The key here is not to go too delicate on the top and keep sheer, lace and frills to a minimum.
