Coach 75th Anniversary

Seamlessly balancing strong durability with an edgy and elegant aesthetic, Coach has been crafting the finest leather goods since 1941 – and although the brand’s identity may have evolved over the years, the dedication to quality and focus on refined expression has remained the same.

The brand’s humble beginnings trace back to 1941, with a small, family-run workshop in the heart of New York City. Inspired by the precise design of a baseball glove, company founder Miles Kahn and his team of six artisans created a collection of 12 handbags using the same meticulous stitch work  – and so the Coach brand was born.

The classic pieces struck a chord with the fashion crowd and gradually the label began to expand. In 1962, American sportswear pioneer Bonnie Cashin designed the famous duffle bag, firmly securing Coach a coveted spot on the luxury landscape – but it was the appointment of new CEO and future Chairman, Lew Frankfort, that really enabled Coach to find its niche. Frankfort recognised consumers’ desire for affordable luxury and by bridging the high street and high-end gap, Coach rapidly grew into the iconic fashion brand that it is today.

Recognised across the globe for its distinctive representation of American style, Coach beautifully captures the vibrant energy of New York through its carefully crafted pieces. Resonating with fashion-forward men and women of all ages, the label has been worn by high-profile icons such as Madonna and Prince – and, today, has caught the attention of a younger celebrity crowd, thanks to British visionary Stuart Vevers.

Leading the brand’s reinvention in 2013, Vevers’ editorial eye and offbeat energy propelled Coach in an edgier direction, introducing a fresh, urban attitude while still keeping the rich heritage intact. From city-ready baseball jackets to clean, contemporary high-tops, the designer’s collections defy traditional dress rules, casting aside luxury age codes with their universal relevance.

Editor's tips: Finding the perfect timepiece

Watch Guide

It’s a watch minefield out there, or a timepiece smorgasbord, or an overwhelming, overcrowded horological marketplace. Whichever way you look at it, we’ve broken it down to a few of the basics and some.

Quartz or mechanicalThe issue of how your watch is powered is probably the biggest pre-purchase decision you will need to make. Quartz timepieces are more accurate, invariably cheaper and more convenient – you should only need to get the battery replaced every couple of years. If you love the inner workings of a watch and you have the budget, you should invest in a mechanical one – your choice is hand-wound (exactly that) or automatic – which relies on the movement of your wrist to store kinetic energy to power the watch.

Get with the lingoThe face of the watch is called the dial. The numbers are called indexes. The button that you wind and adjust the time with is the crown. The ring around the dial that protects the glass is the bezel. The parts of the case that join to the strap are the lugs. The amount of time your mechanical watch will last without being wound is the power-reserve. Any functionality that measures time, such as a race, is a chronograph. This is enough to get you through most ‘watchy’ chats with ease.

Size mattersFirst up look at your wrist – is it chunky or slimline? If you’re female it’s unlikely you’re going to want a case that’s bigger than 38mm; despite the vogue for mannish watches, you will look swamped. For evening, you can go tiny – down to around 18mm but make sure the execution is exquisite. For men, things have changed considerably – as recently as the 1960s men still wore tiny watches. Now size matters, with anything up to 48mm considered perfectly acceptable – although if you have skinny wrists you’ll want to stay around the 40mm mark.

Sports, dress, cocktailDress watches are designed to sit neatly under a sleeve cuff – they’re slimline, often gold and on a leather strap. Dial design is classic and usually subdued. Sports watches are chunkier, on a metal bracelet with added functionality linked to a sport like racing, flying or diving. If you’re a stickler for detail, resist mixing a sports watch with a suit. Cocktail watches are small, often bejewelled timepieces for women, perfect for adding some sparkle to eveningwear.

The Accessories Edit

Accessories

In this era of expressive, individualised fashion, accessories are witnessing a renaissance with a whole array of joyful, playful pieces that add a sense of character to any look. Hunt for designs that are meaningful to you, whether that’s a crystal hair clip or a tapestry handbag.

BroochesRight now, personal, symbolic jewellery should be top of any wish list with badges, brooches and pins decorating everything from jackets to heels. More is more – so go for excess with a multitude of crystal clips to ‘do up’ tousled locks and an array of brooches to soup up utilitarian jackets.

Fur pursesEnjoy the visceral appeal of a faux fur or sheepskin handbag. Once worn, you will never forget how friendly they feel to the touch and how effective they can be as icebreakers in social circles. The only word of caution is to keep these furry wonders out of the rain.

Vintage revampFashion is delving through a whole history of style to retrieve long-lost styles that look intriguingly ‘out of time’. Tapestry carpetbags, clutch bags with Art Deco patterns, shagreen purses (polished sharkskin), 70s-style executive briefcases, Mary Jane heels and gentleman’s velvet slippers will soon appear like your personal heirlooms.

Bovver bootsWith mid-calf lengths and floaty breezy trapeze dresses on the horizon, there is no better way to anchor down those looks than with a pair of bovver or storm trooper boots. Hefty corrugated soles, multiple lacings and buckles add to that sense of tough elegance. To note: the biker boot is defiantly back and in the front row.

Currently coveting…Velvet. I’ll be keeping my eye out for a well cut pair of high waisted jeans, and maybe a skirt or two. It’s not overly dressy, but is just that bit different for when denim gets boring. I’m loving the dusky pinks and purples trend too, so lots of plum and raspberry.

City guide: Top 10 things to do in Munic

City guide: Top 10 things to do in munich

Bathe under ornate chandeliers, surf in the city, travel to snow-capped mountains or sip cocktails alongside celebrities…

1. Take a bathPublic baths are a predominant part of German spa culture and Munich’s Müller’sches Volksbad is one of the most impressive. Housed in an elegant mansion, the art nouveau bathhouse is filled with everything from stone statues to ornate chandeliers.

2. Hit the townBerlin may be Germany’s undisputed king of the club scene, but Munich gives the capital a run for its money.P1 has been at the centre of the club scene here for years and is still a fashionable spot. With world-class DJs spinning house tunes, it’s the place to rub shoulders with Bayern Munich footballers.

3. Visit Nymphenburg ParkThe garden of Nymphenburg Palace – summer residence of past Bavarian rulers – is a lovely place to take a stroll on a crisp winter’s morning. Originally an Italian garden, it was redesigned in the French style and then remodelled to become classically English. The symmetrical gardens, central canal and lakes are stunning.

4. Watch river surfing on the EisbachPerhaps one of the more bizarre sights you’ll see in Munich is wetsuit-clad surfers making their way through the Englischer Garten to surf the Eisbach, a man-made tributary of the Isar River.

Whether it’s a classic carry-all or an elegant mini bag you’re lusting after, Europe’s street style icons are here to help…

Bloggers handbag picks

Nina of helloshopping.de

When it comes to handbags, I prefer classic styles that go with everything – Furla, Bally or Versace are my favourite boutiques at Wertheim Village and Ingolstadt Village. To me, the most important thing is to feel comfortable when carrying my bag. It needs to be practical, comfortable and have enough room for all my essentials! I travel all the time so I carry my Avène Aqua Spray, a moisturising lotion and lip balm in my handbag to keep my skin refreshed and hydrated. Even in the evenings, you’ll find me carrying the biggest tote. My girlfriends shake their heads, but I love them! My top tip would be to keep your handbag in a cotton sack when not in use to protect it from dust and scratches.

BEAUTY: Holly of www.articleofstyle.co.uk

Skincare investmentAs I've got older, my list of skincare concerns has not only got longer but also more specific. Long gone are the days of renewing my skincare routine every month, I’m now focused on finding holy grail products that I can rely on year after year. A generic high-street chemists’ cleanser just doesn't cut it anymore, and if there's one thing you can justify investing in, it has got to be your skin. Think skin-loving elixirs, rejuvenating masks and miracle cleansers!

The triple effectAfter a long day at the office, there's nothing more exciting than removing all the of the day's grime, jumping straight into my pyjamas and forgetting about the beauty queen I felt like at 8 am. With that said, ensuring I’ve gone the extra mile and incorporated three crucial steps (cleanse, tone, moisturise) into my regime makes such a difference to my skin. If I use a night cream, serum or oil to treat myself, I really notice the results overnight. So, 2016 is going to be all about the ‘triple effect’ – an extra five minutes out of my evening to ensure my skin gets the pampering it deserves.

Time to give backI’m going to start volunteering this year - being wrapped up in such digital, materialistic lives means we often forget there are elderly people that aren't fortunate enough to have the simple but vital love from family and friends to get by. Dedicating even just an hour out of your week can make someone’s day and I think it’s really important to show older generations that they aren’t being left behind in this fast-paced age.

Cashmere, wool and silks...

The art of aftercare

The finest fibres deserve the finest care – so follow our guide and ensure your cashmere, wool and silks remain flawless, wash after wash.

PRE-WASHFor cashmere, use a special comb and gently glide over the surface to remove any pilling before washing.Treat any stains prior to washing with a specially formulated solution. Apply directly to the area and leave to soak.

HAND-WASH- Turn your pieces inside out and prepare a sink of tepid water – be sure to use a specially formulated liquid detergent that doesn’t contain any bleach or enzymes.

- Avoid washing with chlorine-based products and don’t soak for a long period of time, instead wash and rinse quickly until the water runs clear.

- For a luxurious finish, soften hard water with half a cap of vinegar to a sink full of water.

Sartorial suiting

Elegantly cut, exquisitely crafted and timeless in form, picking the perfect suit is an art. We’ve asked some of Europe’s top menswear bloggers to help you reach those suiting goals. Here’s a sarto-rial snapshot of formalwear across the continent…

UK: Ronan of thewild-swans.com

I’ve been passionate about fashion and style for as long as I can remember. My mother always en-couraged me to express myself through clothes, but I think my interest fully blossomed when I started reading GQ at 14. I would study each and every page and just knew I had to be a part of that world. A good strong fabric such as vichy wool or herringbone will not only protect you from the cold, but it will also add plenty of elegance to your outfit. There’s an amazing brand selection when it comes to tailoring and suits at Bicester Village. Burberry, Dunhill, Ermenegildo Zegna and Reiss offer the best of their price range. I love the twist that Burberry and Reiss give to their suits in particular, with plenty of fabrics, patterns and colours to choose from.

Outdoor style edit

Dressing for exercise doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style. With a wealth of sportswear brands offering products that combine both cutting-edge performance and style, you can make your every move look chic.

SkiingSkiing calls for artful dressing that will both keep you warm and protect you from the elements. Keep cosy with a base layer of long underwear or a skin-tight, breathable top and leggings together with a mid-layer of a jumper or fleece, and invest in waterproof outer layers to protect you from wind, rain and snow. With a wide selection of separates available in block colours or prints, you can really have fun translating your own personal style into your look. If you’re an occasional skier, try to consider longevity when making your selection – if you’re planning on keeping your kit for several years, you might like to choose something classic in a subtle colour rather than something fashion-led, which could date more quickly. If you’re a serious skier, build an interchangeable capsule wardrobe in complementary colours – you can even coordinate your outfit to match the colour of your boots and skis. Look the part on piste with specially developed ski collections and accessories from Bogner, Columbia, Odlo and Peak Performance.

HikingHiking is demanding and requires stamina – so you’ll need a kit that can keep up. It goes without saying that the right footwear is essential, so head straight to Timberland or The North Face for high-performance hiking boots. Depending on the severity of the conditions through which you are going to hike, comfortable, light yet durable layers are preferable: a breathable T-shirt should the sun break through, a lightweight fleece that will insulate you against the cold and a waterproof to protect you from the elements. Napapijri, Dolomite and Peak Performance have a great selection. Of course, you’ll also need a backpack to accommodate all of your gear – see The North Face for a wide range of practical kit.

Water sports Billabong is the brand for surfers, and its collections offer that laid-back, Australian surfer vibe. Head to the boutique for board shorts, wetsuits, bikinis and more so you can make an effortless style transition from the water to the beach. For those who prefer to take to the water on deck, Gaastra – a brand whose nautical roots date back 117 years – creates stylish yet practical collections including jackets, fleeces and swimwear that cover all of your sailing needs.

RunningTo take it all in your stride, you’ll need streamlined, lightweight pieces with intelligent technology that minimise sweating and maximise movement. Look to Nike – a go-to brand for runners – for colourful running gear and footwear expertly developed specifically for pounding the streets, and Swedish brand Peak Performance for a great range of T-shirts, stylish patterned running tights and lightweight jackets. Choose a combination of black or navy and brightly coloured, patterned pieces so you can interchange your separates easily from day to day.

Denim: the season’s go-to styles

Denim

The skinnyPush sartorial boundaries with a skinny jean that’s both traditional yet defined. The tight fit draws attention to your shoes, so ensure your footwear is on point with a classic pair of converse or a leather Chelsea boot.

The slimClean and refined, a pair of slim-fit skinnies can be worn however you like – roll them up, stack them down or crop them at the ankle. The distressed texture and light wash works best with basics, so add a white tee and leather slip-ons for effortless off-duty cool.

The straightEmbrace the utilitarian feel of straight-fit jeans with a relaxed shirt and lace-ups. Or for a sharper take on casual, mix it up with luxe textures. We love cashmere crew necks in paler shades that really bring out those inky-blue tones.

The taperedTapered jeans are perfect for achieving a more pulled-together look whilst still keeping comfort at the core. The hidden yoke creates a chino silhouette that’s beautifully complemented by an elegant sports jacket or blazer.

Classic Coats

Coats

Autumn is just around the corner and with so many cover-ups to choose from, now’s the time to start gathering your new season staples. From interior-inspired prints to neo-Victorian accents, there are lots of captivating trends to experiment with this season – and while it’s tempting to indulge in a one-of-a-kind coat to top it all off, keeping your outerwear refined can provide the perfect base on which to experiment with edgier pieces. Let’s hear it for the classics!

THE TRENCH COATThe piece: Lightweight, breathable and beautifully tailored, the trench is an investment piece with timeless appeal. Look for honey-hued variations that taper in at the waist, or for a more defined look, opt for a colourblock collar in jet black, navy or khaki.

The trend to style it with: Maximise the trench’s artful ability to keep an outfit pulled together. Throw it over a geometric dress for instant daytime wearability – the more saturated the colour palette, the better.

THE EVENING COATThe piece: It’s all in the detail when it comes to evening outerwear. Look for subtle pieces with delicate tailoring or a pleated structure for added femininity. As for colour, swap statement shades for deeper hues like rich indigo or midnight blue.

The trend to style it with: Amp up the romance and indulge in this season’s neo-Victorian vibe – think delicate ruffles, lace-trimmed necklines and floor-sweeping gowns.

Bags, bags, bags

Find the one

When it comes to choosing a bag, it can be a jungle out there. With so many irresistible styles to pick from, all offering a myriad of different looks and functions, it can take a while to settle on ‘the one’. To help you to make the perfect choice, here’s your A to Z – or rather, B to W – of bag styles.

Backpack

The bag of choice for the practical fashion follower, the backpack evenly disperses the weight of the bag’s contents across the shoulders. Having previously been banished to fashion obscurity, the backpack has recently enjoyed a style revival thanks to the return of 90s-inspired fashion.

Baguette

Those who lead a carb-free lifestyle need not fear: this baguette is less the thing of diet nightmares and more a bag style made famous by Fendi. Long and thin with a short strap, the baguette is worn over the shoulder. See Carrie Bradshaw for style inspiration.
